The embryonic idea turned "from being a much gentler spiritual experience in the landscape to being an angry political song". The song that was born was Solid Rock. The young man was Shane Howard. Solid Rock was released in October The album was Spirit of Place.

The band was Goanna. One of Australia's greatest historians, Manning Clark, wrote the liner notes. Now, 30 years later, Shane Howard is back at Uluru. He has been here many times in the intervening generation, but this time it is different.

He has been welcomed by the Mutitjulu people to perform the song in a 30th-anniversary concert on the weekend of October It's an honour.

Howard is bringing the song back to its source, and yet the song is already here in the memory of the indigenous people. The concert is part of the Mutitjulu Community Carnival celebrating "the health and well-being of families in remote communities".

Their debut full-length album, Spirit of Place, was released in December and reached number three on the national charts. An ever-changing lineup saw Harwood leave the band and backing vocalist Suzie Dickinson join soon after its release. The single reached number 12 on the national charts. Their final album, Oceania, was released in April and peaked at number 20 during May.

His departure signaled the end of the band. It later transpired that he had gone to South Australia, probably due to disillusionment caused by constant touring, band debts, and an unstable band lineup.
